Draft pending legal review

This notice describes what the MyNeta code actually does today. It has not yet been reviewed by a lawyer, and it does not yet name a legal entity, a contact address, a grievance officer, or data retention periods. It must not be relied on as a complete legal notice until those are added.

The short version

  • There are no user accounts. You never create a login to use MyNeta.
  • Your approximate city is estimated from your network IP address so the app can show a local edition. This happens automatically, without a GPS permission prompt.
  • Bookmarks, recent searches, language and day/night edition stay on your device.
  • Push notifications are entirely opt-in, and the subscription is encrypted at rest.

Approximate location

To show local content — your likely constituency, and local weather and air quality — the app estimates your city from your network IP address. It does not request the device GPS permission and does not read precise coordinates from your device.

Making that estimate means your IP address reaches an IP-geolocation provider, and the resulting approximate coordinates reach a weather provider. The external services the app contacts for this are:

  • ipapi.co and ipwho.is — IP-based city estimation
  • api.open-meteo.com and air-quality-api.open-meteo.com — weather and air quality for those approximate coordinates

Each is an independent third party operating under its own privacy policy. The result is cached in your browser's local storage so the lookup is not repeated on every visit.

REVIEW: the app currently performs this lookup automatically on load, with no in-app control to turn it off. Whether that needs prior consent, and whether a toggle is required, is a legal question for the owner's reviewer.

Push notifications

Notifications are off unless you turn them on in Settings. If you do, your browser issues a push subscription and the app stores it so it can deliver the topics you chose.

What is stored: the push endpoint URL and the two browser-supplied keys, each encrypted at rest with AES-256-GCM; a one-way SHA-256 hash of the endpoint, used only to recognise an existing subscription; the topics you selected; and the date you consented. The endpoint identifies a browser instance on a device, not a person, and it is never linked to a name or account because there are no accounts.

Turning notifications off in Settings revokes the subscription.

REVIEW: revoked subscriptions are marked revoked rather than deleted. A retention and deletion period needs to be set.

Data that stays on your device

The following are written to your browser's local storage or IndexedDB on your device and are not transmitted to MyNeta:

  • Records you save or bookmark
  • Recent searches
  • Your language choice and your day/night edition choice
  • The cached city estimate described above
  • Cached member and party records, so the app works offline

Settings has controls to clear recent searches and to clear all locally cached data. Clearing the site's browser storage, or uninstalling the app, removes all of it.

Analytics and server logs

The app records aggregate performance metrics for its own API: the route template, the HTTP method, the response status, how long the request took, and whether it was served from cache. These carry no IP address, no identifier, and no query text — the code rejects any metric whose route contains a query string.

The hosted site additionally loads Vercel Analytics and Vercel Speed Insights, which collect page-view and page-performance data processed by Vercel as the hosting provider. These load only on the hosted deployment. As with any website, the hosting provider necessarily processes the network request itself, including your IP address, in order to serve a response.

REVIEW: retention periods for API metrics and for hosting logs are not yet defined.

Information about politicians

Most of what MyNeta displays is not information about you. It is public-record information about people holding or seeking public office — self-sworn election affidavits, declared assets and liabilities, declared criminal cases, election results and legislative records. Every figure is presented as declared by the person or published by the source, with that source named.

A declared criminal case means a case has been declared or reported. It is not a conviction and must not be read as one. If you believe a record is wrong, the app has a correction route, and Methodology documents every source and known limitation.

Children

MyNeta is a reference tool for public electoral records. It is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect information from them.

Contact

REVIEW: a contact address for privacy questions, the legal entity operating MyNeta, and — for India's DPDP Act and the IT Rules — a named grievance officer must be added here before submission.
